Swallows And Amazons Early Learning Centres

At Swallows and Amazons, we recognise natural variation in individuals’ abilities and learning patterns. Simply put, it means that children learn in different ways and excel in different areas. Therefore, our Learning centres are specifically developed to address the different fields of intelligences based on Howard Gardner’s Theory, including Verbal-Linguistic, Logical-mathematical, Musical, Bodily Kinesthetic, Spatial, Naturalist, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal.

Learning centres give children the opportunity to explore, discover, and take responsibility for selecting and completing a variety of activities. This allows children to find their niche and to express their individuality.

The Art Corner
Allows children to express their feelings through their artwork. This centre builds the Spatial, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Intelligences.
The Block Corner
Allows children to use and develop their Bodily Kinesthetic and Spatial Intelligences as they use motor skills to build structures. Planning with other children requires them to use their Verbal-Linguistic and Interpersonal Intelligences.
The Dramatic Play Corner
Uses and develops Interpersonal and Verbal-Linguistic Intelligences as children interact and role-play with each other. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence is used in the development of body language skills.
Library/Listening Corner
Verbal-Linguistic intelligence is used as students listen to, read and write stories. Musical intelligence is also developed through the music heard in the listening centre.
The Writing Corner
Intrapersonal Intelligences come to the fore when children enjoy expressing themselves in writing.
The Manipulative Corner
Logical-Mathematics and Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligences are developed as children work together with small building materials, beads, puzzles and other manipulatives.
The Sensory Table/Science Corner
Develops Logical-Mathematical and Naturalistic Intelligences as children measure and explore properties of substances during play and cooking.

Some learning centres may be available all year. Others are introduced for special projects, interests or at seasonal times. The teacher organises the workspaces, activities and materials in response to the children's diverse needs, interests and topics of inquiry.
